The backpacking program will spend four – six days traveling on foot through the Loyalsock State Forest. The entire trail is just over 27 miles with the trailhead starting at the old ghost town of Masten.
The trailhead, Masten, was founded as a lumber mill town in 1905. The twon was abandoned after clear-cutting of northern PA forests were complete in 1930. From 1933 to 1940 it was occupied again as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. It is currently being used for a primitive campground deep in the Loyalsock State Forest.
